What to Know Before Your Destination Wedding in an Irish Castle

There’s something undeniably magical about saying “I do” in an Irish castle. As a luxury wedding planner based in Ireland, I’ve had the pleasure of orchestrating countless fairytale weddings in some of the country’s most iconic venues. From ancient fortresses steeped in history to elegant manor-style castles, these settings offer unparalleled romance. However, planning a destination wedding in an Irish castle comes with its own set of considerations. Here’s what you need to know.

Choose the Right Castle for Your Vision

Ireland is blessed with a wealth of stunning castles, each with its own character. Some, like Ashford Castle, offer five-star luxury and world-class service, while others, such as Lough Eske, provide a more intimate, boutique feel. Consider your guest list, style preferences, and budget when selecting your venue. Some castles are best suited for grand banquets with entire villages (like Chris and Lucy’s wedding at Adare Manor) while others cater to cosy, romantic gatherings.

Be Mindful of Logistics

Castles are historic structures, and this comes with unique challenges. Narrow staircases, uneven floors, and strict preservation rules may limit certain modern conveniences. Communicate these details to your guests, especially those with mobility concerns, and work with your planner to navigate any potential obstacles.

Understand the Costs

Castle weddings are luxurious by nature, and with that comes a higher price tag. Venue hire, catering, décor, and accommodation can quickly add up. Many Irish castles operate on an exclusive-use basis, meaning you’ll have the entire property to yourselves, which is a significant investment but ensures privacy and a truly bespoke experience.

Plan for Guest Accommodation

One of the benefits of a castle wedding is the on-site accommodation, but it’s crucial to confirm capacity early on. Many castles have a limited number of rooms, which means some guests may need to stay in nearby hotels or guesthouses. Arrange transportation for guests staying off-site to ensure everyone arrives seamlessly.

Incorporate Irish Traditions

For a truly authentic experience, consider weaving Irish traditions into your day. Handfasting ceremonies, where the couple’s hands are bound with a ribbon or cord, are a beautiful nod to Celtic heritage. (Or, there’s also the Warming of the Ring Ceremony.) You could also incorporate Irish music, poetry, or a toast with local whiskey to honour your surroundings.

Work with Local Suppliers

Irish castles are often located in rural areas, so sourcing suppliers with experience in the region is key. From florists who understand the logistics of working in a castle’s grand hall to caterers adept at crafting menus inspired by local produce, the right team will ensure your vision comes to life effortlessly. This is when your wedding planner comes in clutch. Your planner will have plenty of options and will manage all of your vendors for you so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

Embrace the Weather

Ireland’s unpredictable weather is part of its charm, but it’s essential to plan accordingly. A castle wedding allows you to enjoy the outdoors—perhaps a ceremony in the gardens or a drinks reception on the grounds—but always have a backup plan indoors. Castles often feature spectacular rooms or chapels that can accommodate last-minute changes without compromising the magic of your day.

Capture the History

Irish castles are steeped in history, and incorporating this into your wedding will make the day even more special. Whether it’s a tour of the castle’s grounds for your guests or weaving the history of the venue into your ceremony, embracing the heritage will enhance the experience.

Getting married in an Irish castle is the epitome of a dream wedding. With thoughtful guidance and the direction of your wedding planner, your celebration will not only be breathtakingly beautiful but also deeply personal and memorable. After all, every fairytale deserves a castle.
