Irish Holiday Hosting Ideas

The festive season is a time for gathering with loved ones. Ireland is known for its rich traditions, hearty fare, and incredible hospitality, which makes it the perfect inspiration for your holiday hosting. These Irish holiday hosting ideas are sure to help you bring a touch of Ireland to your festivities this year.

Welcoming Guests with Irish Hospitality

Irish hospitality is legendary, and it all starts at the door. Greet your guests with a warm welcome and a traditional hot drink. Consider serving Irish coffee—a blend of hot coffee, Irish whiskey, sugar, and whipped cream—or perhaps a mulled cider infused with cinnamon, cloves, and a dash of Irish poitín. Display your drinks on a beautiful tray with festive decorations like holly, pinecones, and a hint of mistletoe to set a cosy tone from the outset.

Setting the Scene with Irish Décor

Ireland’s lush greenery, rustic charm, and ancient traditions provide wonderful inspiration for holiday décor. I love natural elements like evergreen garlands, dried oranges, and winter berries as table settings and around the home. An Irish linen tablecloth, paired with simple yet elegant candleholders, is a touch of understated luxury. A centrepiece made from foraged greenery or a bundle of twigs tied with a bow reflects the natural beauty of the Irish landscape in winter.

To truly capture the Irish spirit, consider adding a few Celtic symbols to your décor. A claddagh ornament or a decorative Celtic knot can offer a subtle nod to Ireland’s heritage. Hang up stockings or garlands with an Irish phrase such as “Nollaig Shona Duit” (Happy Christmas).

Feasting with Irish Flavours

Food is at the heart of any holiday gathering, and there’s no better way to celebrate than by incorporating hearty Irish flavours into your menu. Start with appetisers like smoked salmon on brown soda bread, topped with a dollop of horseradish cream, or offer mini bites of Irish cheddar paired with tangy apple slices.

For the main course, you could serve a beautifully roasted turkey or ham, but give it an Irish twist by glazing it with whiskey or Guinness. Potatoes are a staple of Irish cuisine, and you can’t go wrong with creamy mashed potatoes or the more traditional colcannon, which mixes mashed potatoes with kale or cabbage. Don’t forget sides like roasted root vegetables and a rich gravy made with a splash of Irish stout. A classic Irish dessert like barmbrack, a fruitcake often enjoyed during the holidays, or an indulgent Bailey’s cheesecake will leave guests satisfied and full of festive cheer.

Entertainment with an Irish Flair

To make the evening truly special, play traditional Irish music or hire some local musicians to play softly in the background during dinner. After the meal, invite guests to join in a game of charades or share stories over a glass of whiskey. For a touch of fun, consider hosting a mini ceili, where guests can join in a bit of Irish dancing to lively jigs and reels.

Irish holiday gathering are always filled with warmth, laughter, and unforgettable moments. As the Irish proverb goes, “There is no fireside like your own,” so create a festive atmosphere that makes your guests feel at home, wherever they may be.

Venue Scouting: What to Ask When You Tour Potential Wedding Venues

Touring wedding venues is an exciting and often early step in the wedding planning process, so it can be daunting. No worries! I am here to help. Here is what to ask when you tour potential wedding venues.

Capacity and Availability

The capacity and availability of a venue are going to be the first questions you’ll want to ask about a venue. Are they available on your dates? If not, are they available close to your dates, and are you willing to budge on the date? Will the venue be able to accommodate the number of guests you plan to invite?

Packages and Cost

To know if the venue is within your budget, you’ll need to know the rental price. Make sure to ask if there are any wedding-specific packages and what those prices would be. Along with this, get prices for any potential in-house catering or bar services or if there are any extra fees if you plan to bring your own.

Times and Coordination

Will this venue provide the parameters you need to comfortably set up and take down everything from your wedding? Make sure to ask! How early are you allowed to arrive on the day to set up? Is there a point of contact for questions and concerns?

Décor and Restrictions

Some venues have restrictions on décor so it is important to ask. Are you allowed to bring your own decorations? Are there any restrictions on what you can or can’t have? Does the venue have preferred vendors or are you also allowed to bring your own?

Amenities and Logistics

What does the venue offer in amenities? You’ll want to ask about a few things, including parking availability for your guests, if the space is wheelchair accessible, if they have an in-house caterer or if you can bring your own, and any other special amenities or services they offer.

Other than these questions, make sure to inquire about extra amenities, like if the venue has a sound system or DJ equipment, if there are any music restrictions, and if there is a noise curfew.

Food and Beverages

When it comes to drinks and food, make sure you understand what is and isn’t allowed. Is there a restriction on the types or amounts of alcohol served? Does the venue have a liquor license or will you need to obtain one? And is there a corkage fee if you supply your own wine or champagne?

Make sure to take notes when you tour each venue so you can go back and compare after! Your notes should also include the ambiance of the location and how you felt visiting because, as always, your wedding day is about you and you want it to be somewhere that feels right.

And if Ireland is your destination of choice, here are some top places to wed in Ireland.
