Breaking away from the conventional wedding cake and embracing the rich culinary heritage of Ireland can add a charming and memorable touch to your destination wedding. There’s a delightful array of cake alternatives to explore that can be tailored for an unforgettable Irish wedding experience. Top 5 Favourite Portugal Wedding Venues of 2024

If you’re looking to celebrate your wedding at a destination less travelled, may I suggest Portugal? Portugal offers a variety of beautiful wedding venues, ranging from historic castles to scenic vineyards and coastal resorts. Over the past few years, I have planned a handful of weddings for some beautiful couples in Portugal and the country has left an indelible mark on my heart. Are you thinking of a destination wedding to Portugal? Here are my top 5 favourite Portugal wedding venues for 2024.

Things to Know When Considering a Destination Wedding in Portugal

Here are some things to know when considering a destination wedding in Portugal. First, the same common restrictions for European destinations weddings apply. These restrictions include (but are not limited to) number of hours drivers can drive, size of vehicles allowed on certain roads, insurance for drones, fireworks, etc. Sound restrictions (volume, time allotted) apply in lots of venues and in some cases you are required to obtain music licenses. The good news? It’s my job to take care of all these details for you. I’m here to ensure your Portugal destination wedding is as stress free as possible.

With that, let’s dive in to my top 5 favourite Portugal venues!

Palácio Estoril Hotel Golf & Spa, Estoril

You can’t get more glamorous than Palácio Estoril Hotel on the Portuguese Riviera, known for its elegance and grandeur. It is a historic and luxurious five-star hotel located in Estoril, a coastal town on the Portuguese Riviera, just a short distance from Lisbon. The architecture of the Palácio Estoril Hotel reflects a blend of classical and Art Deco styles and the interiors showcase elegance and sophistication, with attention to historical details. The hotel is a popular venue for events and weddings, known for its grandeur, beautiful gardens and romantic ambiance. For your guests, the hotel offers a range of rooms and suites, each designed with a luxurious touch and modern amenities. Quinta do Lago Resort, Almancil

One of my favourite welcome dinners was held nearby at The Bold Octopus which is perched directly next to the Quinta do Lago.

A boutique hotel with a Michelin-starred restaurant, Vila Joya offers an intimate and luxurious atmosphere for weddings. Because this resort is situated along the stunning coastline of the Algarve, it is known for its picturesque setting overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. For couples desiring high-end amenities and accommodations, Vila Joya can’t be beat. The hotel offers a limited number of exclusive and individually designed rooms and suites, providing a sense of intimacy and personalized luxury. And that Michelin-starred restaurant? The cuisine is characterized by a blend of Portuguese and international flavors, using fresh and locally sourced ingredients. What to Pack for an Irish Destination Wedding

Ireland is a magical country known for its beauty and greenery, but this Eden-like wonderland requires all four seasons to stay so lush. When you and your guests pack for your destination wedding in Ireland, considering the season and weather is a must. Make sure you’re aware of the wedding venue and any activities you might be participating in. Here’s a general list to know what to pack for an Irish destination wedding:

Casual & Formal Attire

You’ll want to bring whatever you’re wearing for the main event – your wedding outfit. If there’s a specific dress code (ie. black tie) you’ll want to dress accordingly. Don’t forget accessories (ties, jewelry, etc.) and a formal coat, if necessary. Beyond the wedding, you’ll want comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing for whatever activities may occur, including a waterproof jacket. It’s always good to pack a sweater for cooler evenings. Lastly, you’ll want formal shoes for the wedding and comfortable shoes for walking and adventuring.

Toiletries

The same toiletries apply in Ireland as any other trip, but if you’re bringing a hair dryer or curling iron, you may need adaptors for the electrical outlets. (As well as phones, laptops, iPads, etc.) Here is a handy article explaining which power outlets are used in Ireland.

If your hair is prone to fly-aways in wet air conditions, you’ll want to bring hair products for such a matter. Sunscreen and insect repellent (depending on the season) are always a plus.

Lastly, make sure you have enough medication for your trip as it may be difficult (or impossible) to secure any needed refills while in a different country. Consider purchasing some jet-lag relief supplements if you think you’ll need help adjusting to the time zone.

Accessories

If you have room in your suitcase, bring a compact, wind-resistant umbrella for potential rain. If you don’t have room, there are many shops to purchase additional rain gear, if needed. If the wedding is outdoors or you plan on exploring while you’re in the country, you’ll likely want a hat and sunglasses.

Check the weather report before you leave for your trip and you’ll have a better idea of what specific accessories you may or may not need for your trip. While Ireland doesn’t often have any extreme weather, the temperature can change quite often and sometimes drastically. Best tip? Be prepared with layers no matter what time of year you visit.

Travel Documents

There are some important travel documents you must not forget! Your Passport, ID and travel insurance. You may also want to bring the wedding invitation, as it will have important details to get you to the wedding once you arrive.

Additionally, securing some local currency for small purchases at the airport exchange is always a good idea.

Gift

If you’re bringing a wedding gift, ensure it’s appropriately packed for the journey.

This list should get you started, but a quick search will bring up many other detailed packing lists that will help to ensure you know exactly what to pack for your Irish destination wedding. Communicate with the wedding hosts to get a sense of any specific requirements or recommendations they have for visitors. But most importantly,  have an incredible time visiting this magical place.
