A Dream Wedding at Killruddery House: Brett and Jos’ Unforgettable Day

Love, laughter, and cherished memories filled the air at this Killruddery House wedding in County Wicklow, Ireland, on June 4th, 2022. This historic venue provided the perfect backdrop for the long-awaited wedding ceremony of Brett and Jos. From their serendipitous meeting in 2016 to a heartfelt proposal in 2019, their journey led them to this picturesque moment of pure joy and celebration. Before diving in, if you are looking for more tips about planning a destination wedding at Killruddery (or Ireland in general), check out this blog I wrote detailing do’s and don’ts when wedding planning. And now, a little more about this wonderful couple that we adored working with. Brett and Jos, congratulations on your day and beautiful marriage too!

An Enchanting Proposal

Brett’s proposal to Jos was a culmination of careful planning and sentimental value. Having carried the ring for a year, he chose a breathtaking location—Jos’ family house on a dock overlooking the river. With the ring sparkling in his hand, Brett asked Jos to marry him, and she joyfully accepted. It was a heartwarming start to their future together.

The Welcome Party

Before the grand day, the couple hosted a welcome party at the whiskey distillery beside Powerscourt House. Their desire for a dynamic and vibrant evening led them to this unique location. The impromptu blue and white colour scheme added an unexpected charm to the event, and the couple couldn’t have been happier with the result.

Preparing for the Ceremony

On the wedding morning, Jos found herself surrounded by love and support as she got ready at Powerscourt Hotel. Accompanied by her closest friends and family, and with the talented David Cashman and Christine Lucignano by her side, she eagerly anticipated the momentous occasion. However, when it came time to get dressed, it was a quiet and intimate moment shared with her mother in one of the bedrooms before her Killruddery House wedding.

A Perfect Setting

As the ceremony began, guests were captivated by the ethereal beauty of the amphitheatre at Killruddery. Normally inaccessible during public tours, this secluded spot had hosted open-air operas in the past. With umbrellas at the ready for the unpredictable Irish weather, fortune smiled upon them with a clear sky. Also, an important feature included throughout the ceremony and reception was the use of ceramic swans (symbolic since they mate for life) at the request of the bride and groom.

The Ceremony Unfolds

Jos made her way to the ceremony, accompanied by her brother. The sound of a string quartet playing “You and Me” resonated throughout the gardens as she walked with grace and elegance. The couple’s commitment to ensuring their loved ones enjoyed the surroundings was evident, as each guest was served champagne on the way to the ceremony, adding an extra touch of celebration.

Personal Touches

Jos’ dress was an absolute stunner! She found it during a shopping spree with her mom in Florida, and it was a perfect match for the day. When it came to choosing an officiant & wedding planner, the couple wanted someone who truly understood them. They asked me and I gladly accepted the task, and the ceremony turned out to be everything they had imagined. They even incorporated an old Celtic tradition, binding their hands with a blue rope during the hand-fasting ceremony, inspired by their wedding invitations.

Ringing in Joy

As a sweet touch, each guest received a little bell tied with a blue ribbon. It’s an Irish tradition to ring bells at weddings to ward off evil spirits. As the ceremony ended, the sound of bells mingled with the quartet’s melodies, creating a symphony of joy. Brett and Jos couldn’t wait to move on to the cocktail reception and celebrate with their loved ones.

A Night of Fun and Elegance

The couple’s vision of a glamorous champagne coupe tower became a reality, with everyone enjoying the same champagne that had been a hit at Jos’ sister’s wedding, brought all the way from their parent’s home in France. London Essentials provided the perfect soundtrack during cocktails and dinner, setting a romantic and enchanting mood in the orangery. The flickering candlelight from the hand-dipped candles added an extra touch of magic. Any future weddings could not be more picturesque than this Killruddery House wedding.

Enchanting Sicily: The Ultimate Sicilian Wedding Guide

The island of Sicily, nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, offers the perfect backdrop for a romantic Sicilian wedding. You’ll not only find breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural history, mouthwatering cuisine, and luxurious resorts, Sicily is truly a dream come true for couples seeking an unforgettable wedding experience. We’ll explore two Belmond properties that provide perfect venues for your big day, Mount Etna experiences for your guests to enjoy the island, and share some travel tips to help you plan your perfect Sicilian wedding.

The Belmond Properties

I recently attended an Engage! event in Sicily that was hosted at the two Belmond properties below and wanted to feature them in this wedding guide as potential destination wedding venues because they are not only beautiful but really capture the essence of Italian culture.

Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea

Set on the dazzling shores of the Bay of Mazzarò, the Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea is a stunning 19th-century villa that exudes romance and luxury. Surrounded by lush, subtropical gardens, the villa offers an intimate and serene setting for your special day. Exchange vows on the private beach or in the fragrant gardens before dancing the night away under a canopy of stars. Experiences for Guests to Enjoy

A trip to Sicily would not be complete without exploring the wonders of Mount Etna, Europe’s highest and most active volcano. With various experiences available, couples can choose to incorporate the majestic mountain into their wedding or honeymoon plans:

Mount Etna Wine Tour

Celebrate your love with a unique wine tour, exploring the slopes of Mount Etna. Visit local vineyards and wineries, where you can savor the distinct flavors of Etna’s volcanic terroir. This extraordinary experience allows you to immerse yourselves in the rich wine-making culture of the region while sampling some of the finest wines Sicily has to offer.
Visit a Film Location showcased on HBO’s White Lotus Series.
One of the show’s main filming locations was at Cefalù Beach. Cefalù is a northern Sicilian coastal town located about 2.5 hours from Taormina, one of the locations mentioned above. Cefalù and Taormina are also famous for their sandy beaches, and dramatic cliffs and even include a temple dedicated to the Roman goddess Diana.

Sunset Jeep Tour and Dinner

Take your wedding party on an exhilarating sunset jeep tour, traversing the diverse landscapes of Mount Etna. Witness the magnificent views of the sun setting behind the volcano before enjoying a gourmet dinner, prepared by a talented local chef, in the heart of the Etna National Park. This unique experience will leave your guests with memories they’ll cherish for a lifetime.

Travel Tips

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to plan a Sicilian wedding is between May and June or September and October. During these months, the weather is mild, and the island is less crowded, allowing you and your guests to enjoy the beauty of Sicily without the summer tourist rush.

Transportation

The island is well connected by air, with international airports in Palermo, Catania, and Trapani. For transportation within the island, consider renting a car, which offers the flexibility to explore the stunning landscapes at your own pace.

Language and Etiquette

Although Italian is the official language, Sicilian, a unique dialect, is widely spoken on the island. While many Sicilians, particularly in tourist areas, speak English, it’s always appreciated when visitors make an effort to learn a few basic phrases in Italian or Sicilian. Be mindful of local customs and etiquette, such as dressing modestly when visiting religious sites.

Local Expertise

Hiring a local wedding planner can make a world of difference when planning a destination wedding in Sicily. Their knowledge of the island, its vendors, and unique experiences will ensure your wedding is a seamless, authentic, and unforgettable celebration.

Sicily, with its breathtaking landscapes, enchanting venues, and rich cultural experiences, is the perfect destination for a dream wedding. The Belmond properties, Mount Etna experiences, and world-renowned cuisine will captivate your heart, leaving you and your guests with memories that will last a lifetime. Embrace the beauty of this enchanting island as you embark on your journey of love and commitment. With careful planning and the right guidance, your Sicilian destination wedding will be a truly unforgettable experience.

Experience Sicilian Cuisine

Sicilian cuisine is an essential aspect of the island’s culture and a must-try for couples celebrating their love. From traditional dishes like arancini and cannoli to fresh seafood, Sicilian food is a delightful fusion of flavors and influences. Ensure your wedding menu showcases the island’s culinary gems by working with your venue or a local catering company to create a bespoke menu that reflects the essence of Sicily.

Transportation in Ireland: Do’s and Don’ts When Booking an Irish Destination Wedding

Organizing transportation for your Irish destination wedding is a crucial aspect of the planning process. From ensuring your guests can easily reach your chosen venue to coordinating group excursions, the right arrangements for transportation in Ireland can help make your big day run smoothly and efficiently. Today I want to discuss the do’s and don’ts of booking transportation for your Irish destination wedding. There are many topics to cover such as airports to choose from, car rentals, driving laws, and group transportation for multi-day events.

Arriving in Ireland: Airports and Accessibility

Ireland has two main airports that cater to international flights: Dublin Airport (DUB) in the east and Shannon Airport (SNN) in the west. Both airports are well-connected to major cities worldwide, making it convenient for your guests to travel to Ireland. When selecting your wedding venue, consider its proximity to one of these airports, as well as the availability of ground transportation options like buses, taxis, or private car services to help your guests reach their accommodations with ease.

 Aer-Lingus-DUB-Ireland-Airport

Choosing a Venue Accessible by Car

While Ireland boasts a variety of picturesque wedding venues, some are more accessible than others. When selecting a venue, consider whether it can be easily reached by car, as this will make transportation simpler for both you and your guests. Additionally, keep in mind that some historic venues or remote locations may have limited parking facilities or require special arrangements for larger vehicles like buses or limousines.

Understanding Differences in Foreign Cars and Driving Laws

Driving in Ireland can be a unique experience for visitors, as the country’s roads are often narrow and winding, and vehicles are driven on the left side of the road. Additionally, many rental cars in Ireland are manual transmissions, which may be unfamiliar to guests from countries where automatic vehicles are more common. If you or your guests plan to rent cars during your stay, it’s essential to familiarize yourselves with local driving laws and practices to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Car Rentals for Exploring Other Destinations

Renting a car can be a great way for you and your guests to explore Ireland’s stunning landscapes and attractions at your own pace. When booking a rental car, be sure to compare prices from different companies and book well in advance, as demand for rental cars can be high during peak travel seasons. It’s also essential to verify the insurance coverage provided by the rental company and consider purchasing additional coverage if necessary.

Providing Group Transportation for Multi-Day Events

If you’re planning a multi-day wedding celebration with group excursions and activities, it’s crucial to arrange group transportation for your guests. This can include hiring buses or private car services to transport guests between their accommodations and the various event locations. By providing group transportation, you can ensure that your guests arrive at each destination safely and on time, allowing them to fully enjoy the festivities without worrying about navigating unfamiliar roads or arranging their own transportation in Ireland.

Do:

  • Research and compare transportation options, including airports, car rentals, and group transportation services.
  • Choose a wedding venue that is easily accessible by car and has ample parking facilities.
  • Familiarize yourself and your guests with local driving laws and practices, particularly if you plan to rent cars.
  • Arrange group transportation for multi-day events to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience for your guests.

Don’t:

  • Assume that all rental cars in Ireland are automatic transmissions; be prepared to drive a manual vehicle if necessary.
  • Overlook the importance of insurance coverage when booking a rental car, and consider purchasing additional coverage if needed.
  • Rely solely on public transportation for getting around, as some areas may have limited services or may not be well-connected to your wedding venue.

Remembering that organizing transportation for your Irish destination wedding is a crucial aspect of creating a seamless and memorable experience for you and your guests. Don’t forget to check out my destination wedding checklist for additional tips that might help you plan for different factors such as airport accessibility, venue location, driving laws, and group transportation needs, you can help ensure that everyone can fully enjoy the beauty and charm of the Emerald Isle without any logistical headaches. Taking the time to plan and arrange the necessary transportation will not only make your wedding celebration run smoothly but will also allow you and your guests to focus on creating lasting memories in the enchanting landscapes and rich culture of Ireland.

A Dream Wedding at Ballyfin Demesne | Nick & Lisa

Wedding photos in front of Ballyfin Demesne

Nick and Lisa, both from Ireland, didn’t know each other for most of their lives. It was a fated meeting at a wedding for Lisa’s childhood best friend’s brother, where Nick was a groomsman, that the couple hit it off. From there, the love story flourished all the way to their own stunning wedding at Ballyfin Demesne. And we were honoured to be part of their very special big day!

But, first – the busy professional couple had an intimate proposal. One night, Lisa (a doctor) returned home from an exhausting 72-hour on-call shift, and she immediately knew something was different by the already-made dinner and the well-cleaned home. Nick had taken it upon himself to make the moment special by setting up a clean space and warm meal for his hard-working love to come home to. He popped the question, and after a post-dinner “yes,” their journey toward Ballyfin Demesne began!

The couple went through various considerations before landing on the breathtaking Ballyfin Demesne as their wedding venue. From Ashford to Hogs Head and Sheen Falls, a few local locations were on the list of possibilities, but Ballyfin Demesne fit all of the needs for capacity and days accessible. Location scouting is one of the joys of my job and when we finally find “the one” it’s cause for celebration!

When it came to the theme, Nick and Lisa were ready for the time of their life. They knew they wanted a night that would be good craic. What mattered most was creating an environment that would match the venue they fell in love with and would also provide their guests with a high-energy evening of fun. With stunning floral décor and live music, the excitement in the room fueled the atmosphere and vibe.

Lisa wore an elegant lace number by Zuhair Murad. She found the gown in London her second time searching for dresses. The bridesmaids wore beautiful satin pieces from Dresscode. Nick, already obsessed with the brand, chose a Tom Ford tux. Lisa also chose to dance the night away with an after-party dress she found online from Mila Nova.

The bride and groom enjoyed more than a handful of memories from their day, but the one that stood out the most was driving off from the church in a V8 with the hood down. It was the perfect moment for the couple to share some time alone right after their “I do,” while still maintaining the day’s energetic vibe.

Additionally, the newlyweds were glad they chose to overcome their nerves of public dancing and enjoyed their first dance together -something made easier by a backdrop of glittering fireworks.

Lisa and Nick remained in fantastic spirits despite any chaos the day threw at them. With the wedding approaching and the rehearsal set, three of the couple’s bridal party experienced serious car trouble- requiring last-minute rental cars, tow trucks, and even the arrangement of insurance policies. Despite the bumps in the road, they didn’t allow stress to bring them down. Instead, they enjoyed the wedding of their dreams!

To those planning a wedding, Lisa and Nick highly recommend hiring a wedding planner, especially if you are two busy professionals working long hours. If you’re short on time, a wedding planner is the best way to ensure a successful and memorable event.

I loved planning this special day for this beautiful couple! Is Ballyfin Demesne on your list of potential wedding venues? Is Ireland the wedding destination of your dreams? If Nick and Lisa’s wedding inspired you, here are even more Reasons to Host Your Wedding in Ireland.

2023 Wedding Trend Alert: Hanging Florals for Your Wedding Venue

Wedding decor and thematic decoration are constantly changing, and as we move into 2023, it’s clear that hanging florals are set to still be a major trend. These stunning floral installations add a whimsical touch to any wedding venue, and they offer a unique way to incorporate natural beauty into your special day. Curious about how to incorporate the hanging floral trend? Here are some of my tips on how to incorporate them into your wedding decor.

What are Hanging Floral Arrangements?

Hanging floral arrangements are simply floral arrangements that are suspended from the ceiling or other high points in a wedding venue. These can take many forms, from floral chandeliers to hanging floral hoops, garlands, and even backdrops. As an example, see the picture below of a wedding at Virginia Park Lodge I planned which featured hanging floral chandeliers.

Benefits of Hanging Florals

One of the primary benefits of hanging florals is that they add an extra dimension to wedding decor. While traditionally flowers may be placed on tables or along the aisle, this alternative decoration will create a focal point that draws the eye upward. This can be especially beneficial in larger wedding venues where you may be wondering how to “fill the space”. They also allow couples to incorporate natural beauty into their wedding venue uniquely and unexpectedly.

Selecting Flowers and Greenery

When selecting flowers and greenery, it’s essential to consider a few factors. Don’t forget to keep in mind the location of the decorations, for example, whether or not they will be placed indoors or outdoors. If your ceremony will be primarily held outside, be aware of the temperature (heat can cause drooping in some varietals) and the possibility of rain and if they will need to be under a cover. Keeping this in mind and matching the ambiance of the location, will create a stunning backdrop to create a focal point behind the head table or photo booth. Also, be aware of the season in which you are getting married and select flowers that are readily available during that time of year.

Incorporating Hanging Florals into Your Wedding Venue Decor

There are many ways floral decorations can be incorporated into your ceremony and wedding venue decor. For outdoor weddings, hanging floral installations can be suspended from tree branches or other natural features. For indoor weddings, hanging floral installations can be suspended from the ceiling using rigging equipment or simply hung from hooks or wire. Working with venue staff is important to ensure that the floral arrangements are hung safely and securely.

For the ceremony, floral backdrops and floral arches can create a great focal point that draws the eye to the couple. For the reception, floral chandeliers can be suspended above the dance floor, while floral hoops and garlands can be used as table centerpieces. Garlands can be draped across the ceiling or suspended from the walls and are a great choice for a more natural look. Finally, hanging floral arrangements can be repurposed throughout the day to create a cohesive look and feel.

fall wedding cheese wedding cake table with hanging florals and greenery

Hanging florals are a unique way to incorporate natural beauty as well as add depth to your wedding decor. When selecting flowers and greenery, it’s important to consider your wedding colour scheme and the season in which you are getting married. From floral chandeliers to garlands and backdrops, many options will provide you with the perfect setting for your wedding venue.

2023 Summer Wedding Trends in Ireland

There’s something undeniably magical about a summer wedding in Ireland. As the Emerald Isle blooms with lush green landscapes, ancient castles, and quaint villages, it becomes a dreamy destination for couples seeking a romantic and unforgettable wedding experience. I wanted to touch on summer wedding trends taking the season by storm, including charming themes and delightful Irish customs to make your day a very special affair.

First Trend Alert! “The Understated Wedding Bouquet”

Understated summer wedding bouquets have emerged this summer for those seeking a minimalist and effortlessly chic aesthetic for their special day. In Ireland, a lot of the natural spring and summer foliage works well with this trend. This trend is really highlighted by the wedding party showcasing arrangements with muted tones and subtle flowers and prioritizing quality over quantity and the natural beauty of each individual flower. This trend puts the focus on meaningful details and the intimate emotions of their celebration. The popularity reflects a growing desire for authenticity and simplicity in wedding design, as couples increasingly opt for personalization and meaningful touches over lavish excess.

Understated-Wedding-Bouquets

Second Trend Alert! “Minimalist Stationery”

Minimalist summer wedding stationery is a refined and elegant choice for couples looking to incorporate a touch of simplicity into their special day. This design approach relies on clean lines, understated typography, and a carefully chosen colour palette to create a sophisticated and timeless appeal. By emphasizing whitespace and using high-quality materials, minimalist stationery exudes a sense of effortless luxury, allowing the content to truly shine. The subtle elegance of minimalist summer wedding stationery sets the tone for a sophisticated celebration, inviting guests to partake in a memorable experience marked by an appreciation for the finer details and the beauty of simplicity.

Minimalist-Wedding-Stationary

Stationery with Subtle Celtic Elegance

Celebrate your love with a touch of Celtic elegance, infusing your wedding décor with traditional Irish symbols and elements. Incorporate the Claddagh, the Celtic knot, or the shamrock into your invitations, table settings, and ceremony backdrops. Opt for a colour palette of rich greens and golds to evoke the spirit of the Emerald Isle.

Using the Irish Coastline as Inspiration

Select a beachfront or cliffside venue and incorporate nautical elements such as driftwood, seashells, and lanterns into your décor. A color palette of soft blues, greys, and sandy neutrals will perfectly complement the stunning ocean views and also incorporate current trends that are sure to make your event all the rage this summer!

Third Trend Alert! “Incorporating Unique Customs and Traditions”

Handfasting Ceremony

Incorporate a handfasting ceremony into your wedding, a time-honored Celtic tradition symbolizing the binding of two souls. During the ceremony, a cord or ribbon is wrapped around the couple’s hands, symbolizing their unity and commitment to one another.

Irish Wedding Blessings

Celebrate your love and commitment with traditional Irish wedding blessings, which can be read by your officiant, family members, or friends during the ceremony. These heartfelt blessings, often passed down through generations, express love, joy, and wishes for a happy marriage.

Traditional Irish Music and Dance

Bring the spirit of Ireland to your reception with traditional Irish music and dance. Hire a live band to play upbeat jigs and reels, and invite a troupe of Irish dancers to perform and teach your guests some steps. This energetic entertainment will have your guests dancing the night away in true Irish style.

Celtic-Irish-Traditional-Dancing

These summer wedding trends will help create a truly enchanting experience, with its stunning venues, charming themes, and rich cultural traditions. The Emerald Isle offers a unique and magical setting for couples seeking a romantic and unforgettable wedding celebration. With careful planning and the right guidance, your Irish destination wedding will be a dream come true. Embrace the beauty and spirit of Ireland as you embark on your journey of love and commitment, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
